Malawi was chosen as the focus of our work through the founding members' personal connections to the country and because it is one of the world's poorest countries. The country has a young and growing population, making access to education and opportunities for young people particularly important. Nearly half of Malawi's population is under the age of 15, highlighting the importance of investing in children's education and future prospects. Across Africa, the number of young people is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades. This presents both an opportunity and a shared responsibility: to work together to strengthen access to education and help build a future in which young people can thrive.

Malawi's education system faces significant challenges, including shortages of schools, teachers, desks, books, and other learning materials. Yet children are eager to learn and make the most of their education! Overcrowded classrooms, where as many as 120 pupils may sit on the floor in a single room, can make learning difficult and affect educational outcomes. Many pupils have to repeat grades, and a significant proportion do not complete primary education. Although primary education in Malawi is free, families are still responsible for the costs of school supplies, uniforms, and meals. These additional expenses can create barriers to children's education.
